Luna's Random Thoughts – Chapter 6 Selling not just flowers

I'm Not Really Selling Flowers

When I look back at where Luna & Ray started and where it is today, I think the biggest change is this:

I slowly stopped thinking of myself as someone who sells flowers.

Instead, I started building a gifting business.

When I first launched the website, I was completely focused on flowers.

I looked at flower shops everywhere.

I studied their products, their pricing, their designs and their packaging.

Then I copied that way of thinking.

I uploaded around a hundred different products to the website.

Different wrapping papers.

Different flowers.

Different colours.

Different everything.

As time went on, it became more and more complicated.

Sales weren't great either.

I knew something wasn't working, but I didn't know what.

Then one day I realised something.

I do sell flowers.

But I'm not just selling flowers.

Traditional florists have a lot of advantages that I don't have.

They can work with almost any flower.

They can create custom arrangements.

They can offer same-day delivery.

Customers can walk into the shop and see everything in person.

Because of that, they need lots of different flowers, colours and packaging options to suit different occasions.

My business is different.

Preserved flowers come with limitations.

Not every flower can be preserved.

Most of my customers are also busy people.

They don't want to spend an hour discussing wrapping paper, ribbon colours and flower combinations.

They simply want to choose a gift, pay for it and send it.

That's it.

For a while, I felt completely lost.

I didn't know what kind of business I should be learning from.

So I started looking outside the flower industry.

I spent a lot of time studying different websites and retail stores.

And eventually I realised something surprising.

I felt much closer to jewellery and perfume brands than traditional florists.

From that point on, I started simplifying things.

Fewer products.

Fewer packaging colours.

More consistency.

I began paying attention to presentation and display.

I wanted our domes to feel more like jewellery than flowers.

I started studying jewellery boxes.

Watch packaging.

Perfume packaging.

Slowly, the whole feeling of the website began to change.

In the beginning, everything was soft colours and pastel tones.

Over time, it moved towards black, red and gold.

At that stage, I still thought I was selling premium gifts or decorative pieces for the home.

I still hadn't fully understood what customers were actually buying.

Then the orders started coming in.

And with every order came a message.

Some were proposals.

Some were anniversary gifts.

Some were wedding wishes.

Some were sympathy messages.

Some were apologies.

Some were birthday wishes.

Some were simple messages saying, "I'm thinking of you."

That's when it finally clicked.

I'm not selling flowers.

And I'm not really selling home décor either.

What I'm actually selling is a way for people to express how they feel.

A way to send love from far away.

A way to turn a thought into a gift.

Most customers don't care how preserved flowers are made.

They don't care whether they last three years or five years.

What matters is the moment.

Maybe it's late at night.

Maybe they're thinking about someone they miss.

Maybe there are things they want to say but don't know how to say.

They find a gift.

They leave a message.

I write the card.

And somehow that feeling travels across the country inside a gift box.

Some of those messages are genuinely moving.

They remind me of different stages of my own life.

I've been married for many years now.

But I was eighteen once.

I was twenty-eight once.

And one day, if I'm lucky, I'll be fifty-eight and seventy-eight too.

Every stage of life has its own stories.

Its own emotions.

Its own words.

For a brief moment, those stories pass through my hands before they reach someone else.

And I genuinely love being part of that.

I've always been a very emotional person.

I feel things deeply.

Maybe that's why this business means so much to me.

And it's also why I'm incredibly grateful to every customer who chooses to trust us during some of the most important moments of their lives.

A small business on the Gold Coast isn't the obvious choice.

But they choose us anyway.

I'm someone who cares a lot about presentation and the small details.

That's why I constantly change and improve our packaging based on customer feedback, experience and my own evolving taste.

My hope is simple.

That every gift we carefully prepare carries the sender's thoughts safely to its destination.

And that, in some small way, it becomes part of a story.

A happy story.

A complicated story.

A love story.

A sad story.

Or simply a story worth remembering.

Sometimes flowers are just flowers.

Most of the time, they're something much bigger.
