Luna's Random Thoughts – Chapter 3 Long-Distance Gift Giving

A Few Thoughts on Long-Distance Gift Giving

From selling flowers to selling gifting solutions, my thinking has taken more turns than I can count.

Then one day, I suddenly had one of those moments where everything made sense.

I finally understood what makes us different from a local flower shop.

Fresh flowers might be cheaper.

They might offer more variety.

But we have one huge advantage.

We can be sent anywhere.

Let me explain.

A few years ago, I wanted to send my mum flowers and a birthday cake.

The problem was that she lived overseas.

So I did what everyone does.

I opened Google.

Within seconds, I had hundreds of flower shops and cake shops in front of me.

And immediately my brain started hurting.

Some websites looked great.

Some looked terrible.

To be fair, a messy website doesn't mean the business is bad.

Sometimes local shops are simply too busy running the business to spend time updating their website.

But as someone who knew absolutely nothing about that city, I suddenly had a thousand questions.

Is this florist reliable?

Will they deliver on time?

Are those photos actually representative of what they'll send?

Will they use old flowers because I'm ordering remotely?

What time will they deliver?

What happens if my mum isn't home?

What if I pay and nobody contacts me again?

Is there some surprise delivery fee waiting for me at checkout?

How late can I order?

Do I need to spend half an hour messaging the owner?

And most importantly:

Do I really have time for all of this?

The cake situation was slightly easier.

Cake shops often belong to larger chains.

Even if the cake isn't the most beautiful or the most delicious, at least I know it'll probably arrive when they say it will.

Florists are a completely different story.

Most flower shops are small independent businesses.

Local people know which ones are good.

I didn't.

At the time, I eventually gave up and bought my mum a piece of jewellery instead.

Why?

Because it could simply be shipped.

I trusted the process more.

Then one day I remembered that whole experience.

And suddenly I understood what problem Luna & Ray is actually solving.

We're not just sending flowers.

We're helping people send gifts from far away without overthinking everything.

For example:

First, preserved flowers don't die after a few days.

They last for years.

Second, what you see is generally what you get.

The flowers aren't going to wilt before they're photographed.

There isn't the same pressure to constantly replace fresh stock.

Third, we ship Australia-wide.

Customers can place an order at any time without needing to spend hours discussing flower availability.

Fourth, we handle the details.

The gift card.

The packaging.

The ribbon.

The presentation.

The delivery.

Everything arrives ready to be gifted.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised why our business has gradually shifted in this direction.

Most of our orders already come from around Australia rather than local Gold Coast deliveries.

And suddenly I understood exactly what customers like me actually want.

Because I am the customer.

I have work.

I have a child.

I have family.

I have a never-ending list of things to do.

I don't want to spend two hours researching gift options.

I want to go online.

Choose something.

Pay.

Send.

Done.

Honestly, I don't even enjoy grocery shopping anymore.

I sit on the sofa at night, order things online, and they magically appear later.

Amazon handles half my life.

Woolworths Click & Collect handles the other half.

And I'm incredibly grateful for it.

Because time is the one thing I never seem to have enough of.

That's why I've become slightly obsessed with building a website that makes gift giving easier.

A place where people don't need to spend hours comparing options.

A place where people don't need to think too hard.

A place where they can feel confident that the gift will arrive looking the way they expected.

Life is busy enough already.

Sending a gift shouldn't feel like another job.
